The second commandment is one that most churches break! It’s about not having an Idol in the form of anything in Heaven, on Earth, or in the Waters. However, when you walk into a church today, you wil find so much idolatry! The Cross is the first and major Idol that God specified people were going to come to have and worship in the last days! ( Jeremiah 10:2- 5) The origin is found in Paganism long before Christs’ crucifixion. In ancient Babylon they worshiped the Sun god Tammuz. “T” – the initial of the name of Tammuz was marked on official garments of the priests and also used as a good luck charm over the heart. The cross was a religious symbol used by pagans. Babylonian culture spread to Egypt, and the cross, a symbol of the Babylonian god was introduced into the Egyptian religion. Ancient Egyptian monuments and wall paintings within the temple depict Egyptian kings and gods holding crosses in their hands. It had already been an ornament in 1400BC. Many people mistakenly believe that the cross has been used since the days of the early church. But the first church to have a cross was in 431AD and it was first erected in 586AD centuries after the crucifixion of Christ in 33AD. Another form of Idolatry is the veneration of the statue of the Virgin Mary. We can see through history where this custom of worshiping “the Mother and Child” came from! Nimrod, King of Babylon had a wife named Semiramis. When Nimrod died, Semiramis claimed that he became the sun god and called her son “Tammuz”, declaring him to be a reincarnation of Nimrod. She compelled the people to worship her and her child as a Goddess Mother and Son. Numerous Babylonian monuments depict the Goddess Mother Semiramis with her son in her arms. This worship of “Mother and Child” spread to many ancient countries which were under the influence of Babylon. In Germany there was the depiction of “Hertha” and child. In India, “Indrani and child” and in Egypt, “Isis and child Horus”. Why does God tell us to Keep his commandments? To protect us! What is the earth’s result of continued Idolatry? Malachi (4: 1- 6)
“ Surely the Day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire, “ says the LORD Almighty……….. Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel………….He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of their children to their fathers ; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.” The church of God keeps the commands of God that’s why in Psalms 91 it says, “ A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.”
